Ahhh….my old Kentucky Home. As I’m writing this UK just got beat by Vanderbilt, and Lexington is in shock – but let’s face it, the cats are gonna be OK when it comes to basketball, and nobody wins them all.

Kentucky is about basketball, bourbon, Race Horses, and beautiful scenery – that’s for sure – but it’s also about a few other things – things not so shiny and pristine.

Horse Farm in Goshen KY. Could anything be more beautiful than that?

It seems when it comes to fitness – KY is at the bottom of the rung. As a lot of you probably know already – we aren’t exactly ranking high when it comes to being slim, trim and in shape…but we also have a poor ranking in a few other area’s you might not know so much about.

That’s what this weeks blog is all about – how our beautiful state stacks up against the rest of the country in a variety of areas. Physical Fitness, health, and even mental health are covered…and the results are quite frankly a little shocking.

First let’s talk about our great state objectively and my history here. First of all I was born here in KY, and I grew up here. I lived in Keavy KY, a small country area between London and Corbin. I was a country boy and was frequently hunting, fishing or hitting baseballs outside.  When I got older, I worked as a lifeguard for a number of years at quite a few pools – and two State Parks.

Me at Cumberland Falls a couple of summers ago, holding KY's Soft Drink - Ale 8 One!

I worked at Cumberland Falls State Park for a quite a few summers, and I can tell you that that is one of the prettiest places on earth. The falls are amazing and so are the surrounding hiking trails, lodge and scenic views. Not to mention it’s one of only a few places in the world that you can see a “moonbow” – created from light refracting off of the mist from the falls.

I also worked at Levi Jackson State Park, located in London KY, and it’s also a beautiful location. It’s attractions include McHargue’s Mill, and The Mountain Home Museum.

I’ve been to Mammoth Cave, which is a great wonder – and I think many take for granted that that great Cave like that is actually located in our state.

I’ve also been on My Old Kentucky Dinner Train,  to The Shaker Village, and the Kentucky Horse Park. All great attractions worth every penny.

The Kentucky Derby – the biggest horse race in the world is held here – and top notch race horses are bred throughout this great state.

And how can we forget the National Corvette Museum, home of what is arguably the greatest sports car ever created – and definitely the most popular. I say if one of the most “high performance” and

If we can get our rear ends to look this good…we’ll be doin’ alright.

beautiful vehicles ever created comes out of KY, then the least we can do is equal that with our residents…but I’m jumping ahead…

I’ve been all the way across the United States via Interstate 40, passing right by the old Route 66 and ending up for a short stint (very short) in Hollywood…I’ve lived smack in the middle of Florida for almost a year, visited my Uncle at his ranch in New Mexico, and my dad is from Northeast Arkansas.

I’ve been around, not as much as some – more than others – but the point is that out of all of these places – if you like green, lush, beautiful trees, rolling pastures, and breathtaking mountain views – you’ll never find a place as impressive and gorgeous as our state.

People indeed come from all over the world to see our state, visit our Parks, and see the very things that we take for granted on a daily basis.

Another Picture I snapped at Cumberland Falls two summers ago...beautiful, even with a crappy camera!

So what does this have to do with fitness? Plenty – but you have to stay with me on this one, we have to come full circle.

After talking about how beautiful our state is, how it’s rich in history, home to many celebrities and political figures, home to Corvettes and the finest race horses in the world – we also have an obligation to talk about some astoundingly bad statistics that don’t match up with our rich heritage and attractions.

What are these statistics – and are they really that bad? I’d say yes, and some of them are every bit as astounding as the thundering rumble of Cumberland Falls, or a sunrise on Lake Cumberland.

So without further ado, let’s dig into some of these stats.

First of all I want to set you up with a warning – this ain’t pretty. In fact some of these statistics more resemble a Chevy Pinto left out to weather for 25 years than a new Vette’ rolling off the assembly line in Bowling Green. Regardless, let’s get started:

According to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index KY is the sixth most obese state in the country with 29.5 percent of us being obese. We are second in the nation for highest percentage of diabetes, and fourth for high blood pressure. Ouch. West Virginia ranks Number 1 in obesity (we’ll connect that up in a minute).

Now for a little coincidence – or is it…

Honestly when I decided to write a blog on statistics in KY, I didn’t expect to unearth this “mummy” of a fact. It’s quite disturbing – and was quite a surprise when I brushed the last bit of earth off of my gruesome discovery.

I unearthed a real Mummy with these stats. Something tells me this dude's CAT Scan is not going to come back good...

It seems things run much deeper and scarier than a mere blog about some bad looking numbers. Things are actually coming together – like pieces in a puzzle, making a picture – and the picture isn’t pretty.

KY is the second “saddest” state according to a new Gallup poll which measures well-being of residents; fine – that’s shocking enough, but probably doesn’t qualify as ghastly – however it goes further. Guess who outranks it in depression? West Virginia. That almost gives you chills. The most obese state is also the most depressed…could there be a correlation?

A correlation between lack of exercise, unhealthy living, high incidence of disease – and depression? Now I’m not Sherlock Holmes – or even Watson – but I’m smart enough to know that those rankings probably aren’t  a coincidence.

We talk about how exercise makes you feel better, helps your mood, and improves your mental outlook quite often on this blog. We also often note that this not only works in theory – but exercise is also PROVEN to decrease depression and improve mood by science. That’s right, peer reviewed  scientific research shows this fact.

But when we put these two facts together – the fact that we as Kentuckians are obese, depressed, and sick – and the state above us (West Virginia) in depression is also above us in obesity…the correlation is uncanny.

Now let’s dig deeper, and boil things down to the very city that I call home as a Personal Trainer – Lexington KY.

Men’s Health magazine ranked Lexington KY as the most sedentary city in the nation. OK, that just plain sucks. As a fitness coach, mentor, and trainer here in Lexington, the fact that it’s ranked the laziest city is kind of nauseating – because this the very thing I’m trying to promote in the bluegrass – exercise and healthy nutrition.

It shows that we need to get off our butts and move a little…and it’s just another nasty skeleton in Lexington’s already overflowing closet.

That’s a lot of negative stats folks. A whole lot – and they all come together to make even more disturbing stats – stats that show just how exercise (or lack thereof) effects your mental state, happiness, and overall satisfaction with life.

I’m proof of that myself – I’ll have a major problem (or what I deem as a major problem), do a short intense workout and all of a sudden the “majorness” (I know that’s not a word) of the problem goes down considerably. The problem shrinks right before my eyes and I’m able to tackle said problem. I do this quite regularly – and I also get reports from my clients about the same thing.

The best way I can put it is this: Muscles strengthen and problems weaken with exercise. That’s a good quote – but honestly that’s exactly what happens.

Whether it’s getting the blood pumping , releasing endorphins, or relieving stress by “taking our frustrations out” on something constructive – the fact remains: exercise is the fountain of youth, it’s a natural anti-depressant (shown in many studies to be as good as prescription anti-depressants) and it makes you look and feel great.

Take the unmarked path - EXERCISE!

Then it snowballs: when you look and feel better, you get more self-esteem and self-confidence. When you get more self-esteem and self-confidence you succeed in a greater number of projects and goals, and when you attain more goals you become more successful. Success truly does breed more success…and you get the picture. It’s a cascade of power, all started by one thing. Exercise.

So why is it that we just can’t get ourselves to exercise? Well I think it’s mostly that we don’t have the impetus to get started. Once you start exercising regularly you start to feel “naked” without it – just like you would feel if you left home for work without putting on underwear (E-mail me if you go Commando and I’ll get back to you with another analogy).

Just like with most things in life – starting something new is the hardest part. Once the ball gets rolling you’ll be able to get the habit and keep it up – hopefully for life.

The fact remains that we can change. We can climb the ranks and get out of the hole – if I didn’t believe this I wouldn’t be writing this blog and drudging up these unattractive statistics. We need to fix ourselves folks – and you can do that by getting on an exercise program…

The Ultimate Personal Trainer

There is truly no better time than the present to start exercising. You’ll look better, feel better, and perform better in all aspects of your life.

I’m not the only person in Lexington who feels strongly about the power of exercise – and I hope to have projects and events that will promote and help the people of Kentucky get started and stay on an exercise program. Your body is the most important thing you own. Your car, house, business…nothing compares to your body in value and worth.

It would be better for you to go bankrupt, have your house destroyed, and your car blow up than have a serious issue with your body. Yet we take much better care of all of these material things than we do the priceless creation that houses our very soul. It’s truly sad and something has to be done!

The first step is an exercise program. I’ve seen it time and again – someone will start exercising and automatically they become more conscious about their nutrition. So I truly believe the first step is exercise when beginning a weight loss program. The next step is tuning up your nutrition, and finally getting it to the right level for optimal results – but it all starts with exercise.

Let’s turn this state around – let’s become as beautiful, healthy, and vibrant as the state we live in. If we could accomplish becoming as beautiful as the great state we live in – well, let’s just say we’d be a great lookin’ bunch of people. We’d be the “Corvettes” of the United States, and we’d be standing at the finish line with the checkered flag.

It all starts with you – with the decision you make right now. I truly hope you decide to start exercising. I truly hope you decide to get healthy. I truly hope you decide to get happy. And I truly hope you decide to bring our state off the bottom of the statistical pile, and take it straight to the top… I think we owe it to our beautiful state, but mostly I think you owe it to yourself.

Now get out there and get fit!

Ahhh, another year at the Arnold Fitness Expo! This is the biggest Fitness Expo in the world – with supplement companies and fitness product manufacturers displaying all of their new “high tech” (and usually pretty useless) products.

Crazy people fighting for supplement samples like refugee’s fight for their daily ration of porridge, and more mussels (er muscles) than an oyster factory.

It’s definitely crazy, but oh so much fun. I’m not quite sure why – when honestly the crowds are crazy, your feet end up hurting from walking around the convention center – and the booths give out very little samples compared to the past.

But I was talking to friend who also is an Arnold Classic frequenter, and he mentioned the fact that it’s almost a turning point for the spring to come. It’s always held the first weekend in March in Columbus Ohio, and it’s always cold. So when you are walking to the convention center you kind of know that this last bit of frosty wind hitting your cheeks is truly the last breath of winter.

It’s a subconscious signal that winter is ending and spring is about to bloom.

Now that’s all well and good (fantastic actually), but it also lights a fire under your butt. Let’s face it, all winter you can bundle up in your Columbia or North Face Fleece (I bought one of these a while back, and seen 200 of them at the Expo, I was trendy and didn’t even know it) and cover up that extra baggage.

But when spring starts rolling in, and you have to get out the trunks with the tank tops and shorts – you know that that baggage is going to be on display for the whole world. Your “rolls” are about to be browned so to speak – and you won’t be able to hide behind that winter clothing.

Now you can see that as depressing; that you are doomed to look like a roll of biscuits freshly popped from the sealed cardboard can – or you can take it as motivation. Motivation to melt those rolls and destroy them for the warm weather.

You can do major damage to those fat cells in two or three months, and that puts you right around the first day of summer.

It's That TIme Again! How Are You Gonna Look And Feel?

So I’m calling you out – don’t mope and complain about the fat you’ve gained during the cold weather. Get up and move – change your nutrition and become part of Team CE-Fitness.

Be a star at the pool, beach or even just mowing your yard or heading out to the grocery. Let people ogle you because you’ve created something beautiful, not because you are overweight.

That may be harsh but spring brings that out in me – in regards to myself and others.

I’ve been overweight during the summer and I’ll be honest. It sucks. Hiding your body behind too many clothes. Embarrassed to take off your shirt at pool parties or at the beach. Crappy looking “t-shirt” tan lines that make you look like a freak.

I’ve also been lean during summer and trust me it rocks. Looking for excuses to take off your shirt or get in a swim suit, wearing shorts and tank tops with pride. Not worrying if a certain shirt shows off your muffin top.

I told you before I’m calling you out. I have a few openings available right now. Give me a call at 859-576-4453 or go here: http://www.cefitness.net/free-consultation to register for a FREE no obligation consultation, and let’s get this party started.

Don’t live another day as a prisoner inside a body you don’t absolutely love. Life’s too short man! People buy new cars all the time, but guess what – you still have to get out of that puppy and show your body! The body is number 1 priority! Go here http://www.cefitness.net/free-consultation  and get your consult today – and  make this the best (and fittest) summer of your life! ARNOLD SAYS SO!

nil desperandum – NEVER GIVE UP!!!!

Congratulations to Tim Ray – CE-Fitness Client of the Year 2011!

Tim Ray

Tim Ray holding his CE-Fitness Client of the Year Certificate - which proves he's the best of the best for 2011. That's all the more impressive considering the great clients I've had this year!

This is huge accomplishment, and the strides Tim has made in just one year are absolutely astounding.

Tim started the beginning of last February at 175.2lbs. His waist was 38 ½”, chest was 39 ½”, and he had the onset of high blood pressure to boot (160 over 90).

In less than 3 months Tim lost an astounding 28lbs, lost 6 1/2” on the waist, and gained about 1/2” on his arms. His blood pressure now runs 110 over 60. Fantastic.

So that’s all great – client of the year material already huh?

We aren’t finished yet! After Tim attained his initial goals he became more “specialized” and decided that he would like to have a little more muscle mass.

Now typically I help people with fat loss and toning – but this was a special case. Tim was already “toned” and had his body fat down to a fantastic level.

So we had to turn it up a notch. We had to get some size and shape on Tim in the form of muscle – without gaining too much fat.

This is a difficult process because an “excess” of calories and proteins have to be consumed to build muscle tissue. Eating enough quality nutrients – without eating too many and getting “fat” is quite the tightrope.

I won’t get into the details here – but Tim followed my advice to the T, and here are the results.

In August Tim started his muscle gain phase with the following measurements:

147.2lbs

Waist: 31 ¾”

Arm: 12 ½”

Chest: 37”

From August to the present (February 28th) we have followed a “Muscle Gain” plan – including a combination of heavy and “pumping” workouts, periods of higher calories and short bursts of lower calories, as well as keeping cardio is suitable condition.

Here are Tim’s Current Measurements, and by the looks of them – I’d say we came through with flying colors:

Weight: 157lbs. (10lbs bigger than the start!)

Waist: 33 ¾” (You can watch this shrink back down over the coming weeks)

Arm: 14 3/8” (VERY slightly below 2 inches bigger than the start!)

Chest: 42 ¼” (5 ¼” bigger than the start!)

All of this becomes even more impressive when you watch Tim and I on the following Video. Tim is still lean! It’s amazing that he has gained that much toned, athletic muscle and still has abs!

Over the following weeks I’ll keep you updated on Tim’s progress, and show you step by step how we are leaning him back out – but bigger and better for 2012!

Tim proves that age is nothing but a number. He is in better shape at 43 than he was at 21. In fact he blows that young Tim out of the water…and he’s improving every year!

Congrats to Tim for being a great client and friend and for telling father time to take a hike. Tim is an inspiration and truly deserves to be CE-Fitness Client of the Year 2011.

Can he repeat? One thing I’ve learned – never put anything past Tim Ray.

Pizza Time!

Don't Knock It Till You Try It!!!

You may have seen my Pizza Recipe Video – if not this is the perfect opportunity to try it out. Here it is in written form – and I eat this very regularly.

It comes in at 250 Calories, 28g of protein, and TONS OF TASTE!

Now for the ingredients:

Lexington KY PT Recipe

BIG Snapshot of the Pizza Ingredients!

Yes I made that picture HUGE on purpose! That way you can check out exactly what I’m getting to come up with the calorie count!

Now on with the amounts!

La Tortilla Factory Tortilla x2 – 50 Cals each

Hormel Turkey Pepperoni – 30g (1 serving) – 70 Cals

Kraft Fat Free Cheddar – 28g (1 Serving) – 45 Cals

MID’s Pizza Sauce – 55g (1 Serving) – 20 Cals

Reduced Fat Parmesan Cheese – 2-3g – 1/2 Serving – 10/15 Cals

Spices – Check out all of the ones in the picture. They are all delicious – but you probably won’t use the amount I do…I’m a spice addict. I use liberal amounts and they do have miscellaneous calories – I personally don’t count them. They are pebbles, the other ingredients are the big rocks. I often add jalapeno’s, green peppers etc.

Try this recipe out as soon as possible – it’s fantastic and nutritious!

Squash Browns…Wha?

OK, a couple of my  Personal Training clients have been asking old Jay for more recipes – more complex recipes that are a little more “out there”, a little more Food Network (minus the calories of course). We may be in Lexington KY, but we still like fine eats! These recipes will require a few more ingredients, but the result will be much more “culinary” and a bit more flavorful! Check it out, cook it up, eat it, and give me a review!

Check out this GUILT-FREE side dish for dinner OR breakfast.

For an EASY Gourmet Breakfast that is sure to empress the family. Top these “Squash Browns” with a little of your favorite tomato sauce, an egg (or 2 prepared egg whites) & sprinkle with a little cheese. These are really low calorie, so adding a bit of ketchup should be fine…just make sure to count it in your cals!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 3 cups cooked spaghetti squash
  • 1 egg beaten
  • Dash of salt or salt alternative & black pepper, to taste

Preparation:

  1. Add oil to a large, non-stick skillet and heat to medium-high heat.
  2. Sauté the onions for a few minutes, until they begin to turn translucent.
  3. Mix the garlic, beaten egg & spaghetti squash and season to taste.
  4. Add mixture to the pan.
  5. Cook(flip in sections) until the squash starts to crisp up and turn golden brown. Serve hot.

Makes approximately six squash browns

The Myth Of The Myth

Today. That’s all we really have. Yesterday is gone, and not to be morbid or negative, but tomorrow might not even get here.

Still, we have to prepare for tomorrow.

So how do we do it?

One thing I have major trouble with, but am working on with vigor, is daily patience in preparation for the future. What do I mean by that?

Well, I mean making small daily changes – changes that are livable, effective, and achievable. Let me explain by using an example of this process I am very good at.

When it comes to my body – I have this process down pat. I know that if I’m 20lbs overweight it’s going to take a bit to get lean again. I understand that getting up and doing the proper thing for 3 days in a row isn’t going to do very much to further me toward my goal.

I know that doing a cardio session is a drop in the bucket when it comes to losing 20lbs, and that doesn’t bother me!

I’m telling you, I can tackle weight loss with no problems whatsoever. I’m patient, relaxed, determined, and I realize the time frame for losing 20lbs is 10-12 weeks, maybe even more. It doesn’t bother me at all. I grind it out and get it done.

I think this is because I’m so familiar with how the body works – how to lose fat – and how to “get it done” when it comes to fitness.

My problems lie in having that same patience in other areas of my life – namely my business. I work daily on my business – and still often feel lazy and unaccomplished. I feel like one day of hard work should take me right to the threshold of my goal.

I’ve noticed that no matter how much I do; how many productive things I get done, at the end of the day I still seem to feel like it’s not enough.

That folks is something we must battle. For me it’s in business, but if fitness is your problem – then it’s likely you have this same syndrome.

You work out hard and try to eat better for a week and end up losing a measly pound. “What a waste” you think, “I should have lost 10lbs with that much effort.” So you proceed to get discouraged – and finally you quit.

What you don’t realize is that a pound of fat is about the size of a grapefruit. That pound is actually a huge accomplishment. In fact – it’s amazing that we can lose that much tissue off of our bodies in that short of a time.

I’ve even talked to folks who thought 2lbs a week wasn’t a lot – trust me folks, losing two grapefruit sized chunks of unattractive tissue from your body in a week is a whole lot!

This basically stems from two things:

  1. Mis-education about how much fat a pound really is.

  2. Lack of Patience

Pounda Fat - Lookat Dat

The truth of the matter is that anyone successful at anything didn’t do it overnight. A few people have won the lottery, and a few people have been “discovered” I suppose, but trust me when I say Bill Gates didn’t decide one night to become a billionaire, go to his basement, create Microsoft and pop back upstairs the next day with his pockets bulging.

Big goals (and fat loss is certainly one of them) take some time to accomplish – and when you do accomplish them you have really done something remarkable.

Also the act of accomplishing these goals is a “built in” way to appreciate and respect the goal, be thankful, and maintain it for the long haul.

I’ll give you an example. If I were to magically zap all of your unwanted body fat off instantly – then set you loose on the world, how long do you think you would maintain that fabulous bod?

I’d venture to say – without the discipline and knowledge required to get to the goal in the first place, you would certainly not have the discipline and knowledge to maintain the goal.

You would look fantastic – but immediately your body would start reverting back to what it was before the magical fat zapping. That means within a month you’d be well on your way to your “old self”.

Because no discipline was required to attain it.

That’s the problem with lottery winners. They don’t have the discipline to wield the power of money…so almost all of them end up unhappy, blowing money and even going nutso.

If it grew on trees; the jack wouldn't be worth jack

That same person, if they had acquired the discipline by actually earning the money, would have a much higher chance of enjoying the power and prestige that money can provide when used properly.

So the point of this blog is to let you know that good things must be earned through work and dedication  – and that most of the time they take a while to attain…

And if they didn’t? Well, then everyone would have these things – and they just wouldn’t be that special anyway. Nobody would want a Ferrari if everyone in the USA was given one yearly (OK well I’d still like doing some burn outs now and then but you get the point).

The United States is a very very obese country that wants someone to “zap” the fat off of them. They want to have their cake and their abs.

After reading this blog I’m sure you can see the problem with that – and that not only does a weight loss holy grail not exist, but even if it did it wouldn’t fix a thing.

Only you can fix this. Only you can attain the mindset, knowledge and discipline necessary to get and maintain your fitness goals.

So keep reading the blog and stop looking for that miracle. It’s a myth about a myth. A double lie – something that not only doesn’t exist, but wouldn’t work even if it did.

Get to work. No more excuses. If you want it, you have to go get it. The time is now.

Worry. We all do it; and it isn’t productive for any of us.

I’m steering more and more toward the “mental” aspect of getting and staying in shape these days. After all, without your mind in the game, your body simply cannot change and adapt.

The mind controls the body, and without the proper mindset the body is completely and utterly lost. The body may prefer to stay at a certain weight, but if your mind decides you should be 30lbs overweight – well, face it, you’re gonna be 30lbs overweight.

In this installment of the blog we are going to talk about worry and how to avoid it.

Most Things We Worry About Never Happen...

In my recent research I have discovered that the best way to overcome worry is actually not to try and “stop worrying”. In the past that’s what I always tried, and it never seemed to work.

In the book Psycho Cybernetics (I beg you to please read this book – it is fantastic) Maxwell Maltz talks about worry and how to beat it.

Instead of trying to stop worrying, he recommends replacing the worry with a feeling of “success”.

For example, let’s say you are imagining vividly that you are going to mess up while giving a speech. You imagine getting up at the podium and stuttering, saying something completely ridiculous, or going completely blank. You imagine how the crowd is glaring at you – how you have been made a fool.

Most of us are pretty good at this type of “visualization”. Sad but true. We are used to imagining the worst possible outcome; and doing so with the utmost detail and realism.

Maxwell recommends that you “worry backwards” when this takes hold of you. For instance you would immediately think about some positive and successful event in your past – something that you succeeded at – and replace that vivid “negative” image with a vivid “positive” one.

Eventually the mind will recognize that when something negative is thought of – that that is a signal for something positive to be thought of immediately after. In essence you “rewire” the brain for success.

Now don’t think you have to have won a prestigious award or become a movie star to have experienced “success”. Everyone has success in their background, from winning a race at school to being recognized for rescuing the neighbor’s cat. Everyone has felt success in the past – and that is what you conjure up when you feel like you are doomed for failure.

Alright, now you’re probably wondering how this applies to fitness. Well, I’ve been thinking a lot about this.

I think that if you are on a weight loss plan you need to have your “fuel” sorted out. Fuel is the reason “why” you are losing weight. What is that reason? I can’t tell you yours because it’s a very individual thing. You have to figure that one out yourself.

Maybe you are going to the Bahamas’ in the spring – maybe you want to impress someone – or just get healthy and strong for your family. Whatever the reason it’s yours and yours alone. If you didn’t want to accomplish it you probably wouldn’t be on this site – so that alone should tell you it’s pretty powerful.

After you have your fuel – you need to imagine in vivid detail what it would be like to accomplish that goal. How would your life change? How would you feel? Imagine everything down to the finest detail.

Do this whenever you get a quiet moment – see yourself the way you want to be. Visualize it, smell the air, feel the ground beneath your feet.

Take the success feeling that you’ve had in the past and mold it with this image. You have done it – you have accomplished your goal. Actually feel the success and what Maxwell calls the “winning feeling”.

Ever Think The Difference Between These Two Guys Might Be 90% Mental?

I do this a lot before I go to sleep – with my business, body or whatever my current goal is.

Now you have your “replacement” feeling.

When you start to feel hungry, deprived, or weak, close your eyes and imagine this scene. You’re “winning feeling” scene. Imagine the way you’ll feel, the way you’ll look – the way your life will improve when your goal is accomplished.

Does this take away all the desire to eat bad food or skip a workout? Nope. But I do believe it helps immensely. You will be reminded of why you are working hard – why you are putting in this work and effort, and you’ll be able to stave off the temporary pleasure gained from a tasty treat or skipped workout session.

Try this the next time you have a desire to cheat on your nutrition or skip a particularly unpleasant workout session. Let me know below what you think about this post and what helps you get through those moments! I want to hear your opinions on the mental aspect of getting shape!

nil desperandum! NEVER GIVE UP

One Grain Of Sand

Only one grain of sand falls through the hourglass at a time.

One grain of sand at a time...

This is maybe the most important lesson I have learned over the past year or so. If you think about all the things you have to do to accomplish a goal, you won’t make it.

Only one grain of sand falls through the hourglass at a time.

This goes for nutrition as well. It’s not easy to lose weight and get in shape – but when it’s broken down into individual grains of sand – it becomes possible.

A good calorie level for a day turns into two – which quickly turns to a week…2 pounds are lost – habits are formed…

One problem we as humans tend to have (and I was the prime example of this) is the tendency to overthink things. When we overthink things they begin to seem impossible.

We freeze waiting for the perfect moment, which never comes.

I have really tried hard to overcome this tendency within myself, and whether you are dropping weight or trying to get a promotion at work you should do that as well.

Don’t overthink it. The average weight loss hopeful thinks –  I wonder if carbs are bad? What about before bed? What about eating after 6pm? What about, what about, what about? Enough!

Forget all of that!

One grain of sand man. One grain. Eat the correct number of calories first and foremost and forget the rest for a minute. Nothing is ever going to be perfect. Stop trying to make it that way and tackle the biggest problems first.

Take that step. If another one needs to be taken, study it out and take that one. Don’t fret about it. Take action now.

Remember the quote I’ve used before by General Patton:

“A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.” -George Patton

General Patton wouldn't respect your procrastination...

I say it’s time to take action. It’s time to go out and win the battle. You ate a whole pizza last night? I don’t give a crap. Start today.

You know what I say when I screw something up royally? Whoops. Then I try again. In fact I mess up more than anyone I know…by far.

You won’t find a better time than now. Execute then perfect as you go along. Get started now – that’s what separates the winners from the losers. I know because I was a procrastinating “perfect moment” loser for years.

No more. I study, make a calculated plan and I attack.

Sometimes I find out I could have done it better; sometimes I find out that there are things to be fixed next time.

Who cares? Fix them next time. Keep improving, get better, and move forward even if it’s just a foot before you fall. You are still further ahead than you would have been if you’d have sat your butt on the couch.

Life is a war – full of campaigns and things trying to make you give in and surrender. nil desperandum. Don’t give up. NEVER GIVE UP. We are in war – it’s time to take action. Fall in soldier.

Calories In Disguise

I was walking around at the grocery the other day and wandered down the cereal bar isle. These bars include fiber-one and nutri-grain bars, among others. As a personal trainer, I notice a few things that others wouldn’t I suppose.

I noticed that many of the boxes bragged on the health benefits of the bars. “No High Fructose Corn Syrup” exclaimed one; “Rich in Fiber, Low in Fat” shouted another.

The fact that these bars have good ingredients and some helpful qualities for the body is not the issue here. The issue is the fact that people think that just because something is low in fat, or doesn’t include high fructose corn syrup – that they can chow down without ramifications.

I hate to be a “bubble buster” but these bars are rich in calories the same as snack cakes. It amazes me how often I have to tell people that they can get just as fat on healthy selections as their “junk food” cousins.

At Least This Cat Is Straight Up With You…No Hidden Agendas Here!

Get up and eat a bowl of granola cereal and a protein shake and you could be looking at a whopping 600 plus calories. Get up and eat a hostess cupcake and a protein shake and you’ll ring in around 300 calories.

That’s not opinion. It’s fact.

Fat made from “healthy foods” looks exactly the same on our bodies as fat made from “junk food”. It’s still jiggly, it’s still nasty, and it’s still unhealthy.

Now I’m not telling you to go out and buy snack cakes and have them for breakfast, but the fact remains that too many people are eating trail mix, nuts, granola, and other “healthy” foods and thinking they won’t get the old blubberoo from them.

Trust me, you will – and it will be just as ugly as fat made from Hershey bars or fried potatoes.

So keep an eye out for calories in disguise – they like to talk about how nice they are – how they don’t have certain ingredients – how they are the nice guys.  Well in this case the nice guys are only as nice as the amount of them you consume.

I’ve said it over and over – when it comes to your waistline – calories are calories.

Don’t fall for the tricks, check out the label – the one on the back – and see how much fuel is in this so called “healthy” choice. Only then will you know how much of the food you can consume – and if it’s a good return of investment.

Whether you like it or not, if you don’t want to be overweight, you have a set amount of calories you can consume in a day. Go over and you wear it. And like I always say: “Wearing fat around is worse than a polyester leisure suit, it’s uncomfortable, it’s ugly, it’s out of style, and if you don’t burn it – it lasts forever.”

Talk soon.
